What if history could be explored not just through textbooks, but by standing amidst the monuments that tell its story? With this thought, students of Drona Global School embarked on an enriching educational heritage visit to Thanjavur, with a special visit to the magnificent Brihadisvara Temple, popularly known as Periya Kovil, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Planned as an Education-Based Experiential Learning Programme in alignment with the vision of NEP 2020, the visit provided students with an opportunity to observe, explore, question, and connect their classroom learning with a real historical and cultural setting.
Exploring the Legacy of the Cholas

Thanjavur holds an important place in the history of Tamil Nadu, particularly for its association with the Chola dynasty. The visit introduced students to the historical significance of the region and helped them understand how the Cholas contributed to the development of art, architecture, culture, and administration.
Standing within the historic surroundings of Periya Kovil gave students a deeper perspective on the achievements of an ancient civilisation. The experience encouraged them to look at history not merely as dates and events, but as a living legacy preserved through monuments and cultural traditions.
Discovering Ancient Architecture and Engineering

The Brihadisvara Temple provided a fascinating opportunity for students to explore Dravidian architecture, structural design, and ancient engineering techniques. The temple's grand scale, carefully planned structures, towering architecture, and intricate details encouraged students to observe how engineering and artistic vision came together centuries ago.
The visit sparked curiosity about how such a remarkable structure could have been designed and constructed using the knowledge, skills, and resources available during the Chola period.

The inscriptions also helped students understand how historical records provide valuable information about the past. Through direct observation, they could appreciate how monuments can serve as sources of knowledge about society, culture, and historical developments.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The Thanjavur heritage visit reflected Drona Global School's belief that meaningful learning can happen beyond classroom walls. The experience brought together history, architecture, art, culture, engineering, and environmental awareness in an engaging and multidisciplinary manner.
Students had opportunities to observe, discuss, ask questions, and reflect on what they encountered. This approach supports the principles of experiential and competency-based learning highlighted in NEP 2020.
